Of the many roles the Jeep performed one of the most important was as a radio equipped command vehicle. During WWII tactical radio communications became an absolute necessity. Depending on the vehicle and size of the radio they were mounted in various locations. The first transceiver was the SCR-193 mounted in the rear compartment of the Jeep. When FM radios became available there were at least 13 different configurations of the SCR and 1 VRC series. Each series of radios covered specific channels. Armored units used the SCR-500 while artillery used the SCR-600 and airborne units used the SCR-499 radios.
Designed to meet a US Department of War requirement for a light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle, the Willys MB Army Jeep was manufactured between 1941 and 1945. The Willys Jeep was the original version of what would later become one of the most iconic vehicles in American history, evolving into a popular civilian vehicle that is still being produced today. The Willys Jeep was a compact, four-wheel drive vehicle that rapidly became one of the most prolific vehicles of WWII. More than 640,000 standardized versions were produced, with 8,690 other versions built over a period of four years. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale Jeep has lots of scale detail in a small package. The body is constructed in diecast metal and the chassis, drive train and suspension are constructed in plastic, which allows for maximum detail. The interior features a pad-printed instrument panel, separately painted seat cushions, a steering wheel and three transmission gear-shifts. There is a folding windscreen on the exterior, along with a delicate side mirror painted to look like real glass. Separately applied battlefield equipment includes shovels, hatchets, jerry cans and a spare tire. Underneath the model the drive train and leaf-spring suspension are clearly visible.
