Operation Barbarossa required the German Army to form into Army Group North, Center and South. The North would march to the Baltics and Leningrad, Center would take Smolensk and Moscow while Army Group South drove through the Ukraine capturing Kiev before proceeding eastward and capturing the oil-rich region of the Caucasus. Soviet forces at Kiev made it necessary for half of Army Group Center’s tank to be diverted to assist Army Group South. On October 2, 1941 the Soviets were defeated after 10 days of fighting.
Designed to fill a gap in the production of the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks, which were experiencing delays in development, the Panzer II or Panzerkampfwagen II was first tested in October of 1935. Larger than its predecessor, the Panzer I, the Panzer II was Germany's primary battle tank until the beginning of 1941 but was nevertheless fairly ineffective in combat. It was really better suited for use as a light reconnaissance tank, and is particularly important because of the role it played in the development of later more powerful Panzers. Panzer IIs were removed from the front lines in 1942. © Copyright 2003-2013 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale Panzer II is a small tank in this scale. The bottom portion of the hull is constructed in diecast metal with the top portion and turret in plastic, which allows for maximum details like panel hinges and simulated diamond-plate surfaces on the tracks' fenders. Battlefield and track repair equipment are both separately applied and integrated into the hull's casting. The 360 degree rotating turret has a pivoting co-axial mounted machine gun and cannon, and the leaf-spring suspension on each road wheel can be clearly seen through the vehicle's tracks.
