After WWII with Germany divided into East and West the West German military (Bundeswehr) was supplied with U.S. built equipment. The first tanks to arrive were the M41 Walker Bulldogs followed by the M47 and M48. The Germans made several modifications to these vehicles and in 1956 the Germans began development their own tank, the Standard-Panzer, to meet their requirements and replace the aging "M" series tanks. The new Leopard 1 tank entered service in 1965.
