In 1955 Capital Airlines became the first U.S. Operator of Vickers Viscounts. Capital used Viscounts on their after dark “Nighthawk” routes between Chicago and New York but expanded to 4 or 5 other routes. Labor troubles and problems with the Civil Aeronautics Board nearly bankrupted Capital so they merged with United Airlines in 1961. N7402 was a V.744 with c/n 88 and leased to Capital and joined the fleet as #321. The aircraft had square tipped propellers which weren’t normal for the engines used. In 1961 the aircraft was destroyed during a landing.
Designed as a result of the UK Brabazon Committee's proposal for post WWII transports, the Viscount was first flown on July 16th, 1948.© Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
