In December 1956 the aircraft sold to Slick Airways and registered as N11817 before selling to Alaska Airlines in 1958. On February 22, 1960 while doing a GCA approach into Elmendorf AFB Alaska; the aircraft touched down 1,200 feet short injuring the 4 crew members. The pilot had improper speed, flap and manifold pressure settings. The other crew were aware of this, but said nothing and the GCA controller advised he was below the glide path.
Designed to meet a USAAF requirement for a larger-capacity transport than the C-54 (DC-4), the Douglas DC-6 was first flown on June 29th, 1946. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
