Western Airlines began operations on July 13, 1925 as Western Air Express flying a portion of the U.S. Mail routes. They also started to carry a few passengers and this became so successful that WAE began the first scheduled and sustained passenger service in the U.S.. On March 11, 1941 WAE was renamed Western Airlines. In 1986 Western began merger talks with Delta Airlines and on April 1 1987 Western Airlines ceased to exist. N93126 was built as a Douglas DC-6B c/n 45322 and delivered to Western Airlines in February 1958 as ship #926. After several sales the aircraft was converted to a DC-6BF and registered as AN-BFN. On June 6, 1979 the aircraft was making an illegal drug run and the pilot overshot the runway and the aircraft was destroyed but the crew survived.
Designed to meet a USAAF requirement for a larger-capacity transport than the C-54 (DC-4), the Douglas DC-6 was first flown on June 29th, 1946. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
