In January 1957 Douglas DC-7C cn 45161/757 was delivered to Sabena (Société Anonyme Belge d'Exploitation de la Navigation Aérienne) as OO-SFE. In the spring of 1963 OO-SFE was one of three Sabena DC-7s sold to Caledonian Airways and it was registered as G-ASID. On September 28, 1964 at Yesilkoy Airport, Istanbul, Turkey during a thunderstorm G-ASID made a very heavy landing that collapsed the left main gear resulting in damages so bad that the aircraft was considered a write-off.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a long-range passenger airliner with superior performance to the Lockheed Super Constellation, the DC-7 was first flown on May 18th, 1953. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
