In 1934 NC14274 was delivered as American Airlines first DC-2. On January 14, 1936 Trip One left Newark New Jersey for its final destination Fort Worth Texas. After a crew change in Memphis the flight left for the next stop at Little Rock. Flying at 180 mph and no indication of problems the aircraft hit trees and slammed into a swamp killing the 3 crew and 14 passengers. No definite cause was ever determined but speculation was there may have been passenger interference leaving a distracted co-pilot alone in the cockpit.
Designed to meet a TWA requirement for a passenger aircraft comparable to the Boeing Model 247, the DC-2 was first flown in 1934. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
