Designed as a descendant of the Soviet Union's famous T-34 medium tank, the T-55 series of main battle tanks first entered service in 1959. This tank has a fully tracked, five-road-wheeled chassis with no space between the first and second road wheels and no return rollers. It combines a high-velocity gun, a highly mobile chassis, a low silhouette and exceptional long-range endurance. It can ford depths of 1.4 meters without preparation and 5.5 meters with snorkel equipment. Used by some 47 other nations on both sides of the Iron Curtain, the T-55 saw use with Soviet and Warsaw Pact forces. © Copyright 2003-2013 The Flying Mule, Inc.
