The Super Etendard is a single-seat carrier-based strike fighter. With the ability to reach Mach 1 at optimum altitude, this French aircraft was used in both the Falklands War and by the Iraqi air force in the Persian Gulf in the early 1980s. It maintains two 30mm DEFA 553 cannons and can store up to 4,630 pounds of additional armament, including nuclear weapons and refueling and reconnaissance pods. Production of the Super Etendard ceased in 1983 and the Rafale is scheduled as its replacement.
Designed to meet a French Naval requirement for a new carrierborne strike/attack fighter, the Super Etendard was first flown on October 29th, 1974. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
