The MIG 23 was developed as an improvement over the troubled MIG 21. The MIG 23 entered service in 1972 with enlargend radar and fuel capacity. This single seat combat fighter has a max speed of 1520 m.p.h. and featured cannons and air to air missiles. Designed to replace the MiG-21, the MiG-23 was first flown on April 10th, 1967. To improve performance, this balanced strike/fighter-bomber was built with variable-sweep wings that could be set at 16, 45, or 72 degrees of sweep. The design included box-like air intakes forward of the wing roots and a single exhaust. The Flogger had powerful radar, an infrared tracking system, infrared guided weapons and could achieve speeds of Mach 2 plus. The MiG-23 was a reliable and robust performer, and was one of the most-produced and most successful aircraft of the Cold War. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
