The North American B-25J Mitchell was a five-seat medium bomber. Named after a champion of US Air Power, William "Billy" Mitchell, the first B-25 took flight in summer 1940. There were nearly a dozen variants of the aircraft, but the B-25J was the most common (4,390 B-25Js were actually produced). The Mitchell could reach a maximum speed of 227mph, had a maximum take-off weight of 35,000 pounds, and was armed with twelve 12.7mm machine-guns.

First flown in August, 1940 The North American B-25 Mitchell became standard equipment for the allies in World War II. This twin-engine bomber was the most heavily armed airplane in the world. It was used for high- and low-level bombing, strafing, photoreconnaissance, submarine patrol and as a fighter. There were at least six major variants of the Mitchell, which included upgrades to power-operated two-gun turrets, the "greenhouse" style nose, and the 75mm cannon (one of the largest weapons fitted to an aircraft). The B-25 is perhaps most famous for its use in the Doolittle raid on Tokyo on April 18th, 1942.
