Referred to as 'Nick' by the Allied Forces, the Kawasaki Ki-45 Toryu was a two-seat night-fighter used by the Imperial Japanese Army in World War II. A total of 1,698 Ki-45s were built, and they were primarily used for defense purposes. The 'Nick' could reach a maximum speed of 339 mph, had a maximum take-off weight of 12,125 pounds (8,818 when empty), and was very effective against the B-24 Liberator (of the US). The armament was different amongst all variants, but there was always a provision for two drop-tanks or two 551-pound bombs on the underwing racks.
Designed in response to the development of European heavy fighters such as the Messerschmitt Bf 110, the Ki-45 was first flown in May of 1941. This twin-engine, two seat fighter entered service in February, 1942 and was assigned to home defense, where its heavy armament proved effective against the B-29 raids of 1944. Performance deficiencies, however, rendered it unable to compete with B-29s flying at higher altitudes, and later modifications were unable to improve upon these problems. Late in the war it was used in ramming attacks, and by 1945 had been rendered ineffectual by carrier based Allied aircraft. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
