The Martin B-26 Marauder was designed to meet the USAAC need for a high speed, medium bomber. In 1939, Martin received an order for 201 B-26s. What made this order so unusual was that the company was awarded an "off the drawing board" contract; there was no requirement for a prototype or preproduction sample. This aircraft was equipped with up to 11 machine guns and 4,000lbs of bombs. "Baby Bumps II" belonged to the 387th Bomb Group, 557th Bomb Squadron (England/France). Designed to meet a USAAC requirement, the Martin B-26 Marauder was first flown on November 25th, 1940. It overcame a rocky start to become one of the finest medium bombers of World War II. The Martin's nose assembly contained a glazed window position for a single crew member acting as bombardier. Other positions included a dorsal turret gunner, who was placed at the tail vertical fin, and a tail gunner occupying the aft position. Armament consisted of well-placed defensive machine gun positions throughout the fuselage. Twelve heavy caliber 12.7mm (.50 caliber) machine guns defended the aircraft from nose to tail.© Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
