The Travel Air Manufacturing Company of Wichita, Kansas, was organized by Lloyd Stearman, Walter Beech and Clyde Cessna. Backed by men of this caliber, it was no surprise when the three-place, Travel Air biplanes became commercial successes. Characterized by their unusual rudder shape and "elephant-ear" ailerons, Travel Airs were used for primary instruction by ·schools such as Parks Air College in East St. Louis, Illinois. Others were employed as barnstorming airplanes. Little more than an air-cooled, radial-powered version of the Travel Air 2000 or 3000 ... the Travel Air 4000 was merely the next step in the company progression. It was available with a wide selection of engines and was produced in large numbers. The Travel Air went through so many different model changes that, like the Waco Cabins, any example currently displayed on the airshow circuit is likely to be the last of its type still flying.
