This Oxford Aviation model is based on a German aircraft that was deployed during World War II primarily as a personnel transport and liaison plane, in this case as used by Rommel during the North African campaign. Designed by Willy Messerschmitt and manufactured by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke (hence the Bf abbreviation), the Bf108 first flew in 1934 and was introduced into service a year later. It was of all-metal construction with low fuel consumption, good handling and very good take-off and landing performance, which made it ideal in desert conditions. It was flown primarily by the Luftwaffe and during WWII, its manufacture was transferred to Occupied France. Just over 800 were built in all and the aircraft was retired in 1945. Our Oxford replica comes in the German desert camouflage colour scheme of sand and green, with duck egg blue underside. The wing tips, tail band and wing walkways are painted white and the German Luftwaffe lettering is black. Finally, the single propeller is dark green black with white spinner.
