On Oct. 16, 1963, Maj. Sid Kubesch, Maj John Barrett and Capt Gerard Williamson flew a B-58, assigned to the 305th BW, on the longest supersonic flight to that date. The flight was called Operation Greased Lightning. They flew 8,028 miles from Tokyo to London in eight hours, 35 minutes. Using five inflight refuelings they averaged 938 mph. Although there were no aeronautical trophies awarded for this flight each crew member was awarded the DFC . Major Kubesch received the David C. Schilling Award in 1964. 61-2059 is on display at the Strategic Air Command Museum, located at Ashland, Nebraska.

Convair B-58A Hustler

Designed as a supersonic strategic medium-range bomber, the B-58 was first flown on November 11th, 1956. Convair applied much of the experience they had gained from developing delta-winged supersonic fighters to the design. A unique feature of the aircraft was the use of a jettisonable centerline pod which not only contained additional fuel for the aircraft but also housed the nuclear payload or specialized reconnaisance equipment. The Hustler became the United States' first operational supersonic bomber when it entered service in 1960 but was retired just 10 years later when Soviet missile technology canceled out any advantage the aircraft had over the exisiting B-52 fleet.
