The German Messerschmitt BF109 was the Luftwaffe's standard single-seat fighter and was virtually unmatched in the early years of World War II. The BF109G was powered by a 1800 horsepower Daimler-Benz engine which enabled it outrun its enemies. The drawback was fuel consumption which proved very limiting against the RAF in the Battle of Britain.
