Built by Higgins Industries, the LCM3 Landing Craft could deliver a 30 ton tank---but was mainly used as a troop and cargo transport. They first saw action on Tarawa in 1943, but also delivered deadly cargo to the shores of the Mediterranean and North Atlantic during the Invasion of Normandy.

Higgins LCM(3) Landing Craft

Originally developed by the British in 1920, the flat-bottom (LCM) Mechanized Landing Craft was constructed of steel and powered by two diesel engines, twin screws and rudders, which could be controlled from the pilothouse. These ‘walled barges’ were the link between the beach and the large transport ships that sat offshore. The LCMs’ huge bow ramps dropped upon landing to allow men and equipment to "hit the beach" in an amphibious assault. One of the most famous uses of the LCM was during the Normandy landings on D-Day, June 6th 1944.
