The AH-64D Longbow is the upgraded version of the initial AH-64A. The enhancements include the new advanced fire control system, new hellfire missile capabilities, new and more powerful engines, and a new electronics suite for much greater lethality. Although built on a similar platform, the Longbow is immediately identifiable by the mast mounted fire control radar assembly. This AH-64 replica features detailed rotor head assemblies on both the rotating main rotors and tail rotors, with the Longbow dome installed over the main rotor. The stub-wing pylons highlight the complete set of weapon ordinances on each side of the fuselage, and the cowlings on the engine nacelles are hinged and open to reveal the turbo-shaft engine details. The camera housing on the nose rotates and is located just above the lethal chain gun that can point in any direction. The aircraft’s large greenhouse canopy permits easy viewing of both the crew and cockpit interior.
Designed to meet a US Army requirement for an advanced attack helicopter, the AH-64 was first flown on September 30th, 1975. The AH-64 is the principal attack helicopter of the US Army and a successor to the AH-1 Cobra. The cockpit is designed so that one pilot sits directly behind the other, with flight and firing controls for each. The main fixed armament is a 30 mm M230 Chain Gun under the aircraft's nose. The AH-64 can also carry a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire and Hydra 70 rocket pods. The heavily armored Apache is essentially a flying tank, a terrifying presence for enemy ground forces. © Copyright 2003-2010 The Flying Mule, Inc.
