Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-3 | | 4.5" | | 5.5" | Designed as an improvement upon the largely defective MiG-1 prototype, the MiG-3 was first flown on October 29, 1940. By 1941 nearly 1,000 MiG-3s were in service with the Soviet Union, but the aircraft's overall performance proved to be a disappointment. Designed for high-altitude dogfighting, the MiG-3 rarely encountered ideal conditions over the Eastern Front, where it was outclassed by the German Bf 109. Although the MiG-3 was not well regarded, several Soviet aces were able to exploit its hidden advantages-the third leading Soviet ace of WWII, Aleksandr Pokryshkin claimed a number of his 53 official air victories in a MiG-3. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
