The Messerschmitt Bf109 was designed in 1934 by Willy Messerschmitt for potential use as a high speed, short-range bomber interceptor. The first variants were relatively low powered but later variants incorporated major redesigns, including a heavier engine, more armaments and the provision for a long range drop tank to rectify its short-range limitations. "G" (for Gustav) was one of these and our particular liveried aircraft is a model of the one flown by Kommando Nowotny, a Luftwaffe fighter Gruppe, which had been formed in 1944 as Sqn II/JG-7 Nowotny Schwarm. The squadron was under the command of Major Walter Nowotny, a famous Austrian WWII fighter ace, who was sadly killed towards the end of 1944. However, JG-7 is credited with at least 136 "kills" fully documented, with a probable further 420 Allied fighter planes being destroyed by this crack force. Our Oxford Bf109G Messerschmitt represents the aircraft which flew in April 1945 and which was dedicated to the memory of Major Nowotny. As the war ended, almost 34,000 Bf109s had been built, making it the most widely produced fighter aircraft in history. Designed to meet a Luftwaffe need for a single-seat fighter/interceptor, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was first flown on May 28th, 1935. Its all-metal construction, closed canopy and retractable gear made the Bf 109 one of the first true modern fighters of WWII. This versatile aircraft served in many roles and was the most produced aircraft of the war and the backbone of the Luftwaffe, and was flown by Germany's top three aces, who claimed a total of 928 victories between them. Armed with two cannons and two machine guns, the Bf 109's design underwent constant revisions, which allowed it to remain competitive until the end of the war. © Copyright 2003-2023 The Flying Mule, Inc.
