Northrop P-61A Black Widow   8.25"   11"

P-61A #42-25502 wore nose-art bearing the name "Skippy" on the left hand side of the fuselage and "Nocturnal Nemesis" on the right hand side. She was crewed in the Pacific Theater by Lt. Dave T. Corts and Lt. Alexander Berg with the 421st Night Fighter Squadron. The 421st Night Fighter Squadron was activated on May 1st, 1943 in Orlando, Florida flying the P-70 Havoc and deployed to Milne Bay, New Guinea later that year. The squadron quickly traded their P-70s for P-38 Lightnings before moving on to the P-61 Black Widow in June, 1944. They moved throughout New Guinea as necessary in support of Army Assault landings and eventually relocated to the Philippines in October, 1944.

Northrop P-61A Black Widow

The heavily-armed Black Widow-the United States' first aircraft specifically designed as a night-fighter-first flew on May 21st, 1942. The P-61 had four forward-firing 20mm cannons and a dorsal turret housing four .50-caliber machine guns. The radar equipment in its nose enabled its crew to locate and attack enemy aircraft in total darkness. The twin boom arrangements housed two Pratt & Whitney turbocharged engines and were joined at rear by a large plane and twin rudder formation. The pilot was seated in the main fuselage, with the gunner immediately behind him and the radar operator at the rear of the gondola.
