On the afternoon of January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, departed from New York's LaGuardia Airport bound for Charlotte, NC. Just two minutes into the flight, a flock of Canadian Geese struck the plane, disabling both engines. With no power, and 150 passengers and five crew members onboard, Captain Chesley Sullenberger and First Officer Jeffrey Skiles decided their only option was to guide the plane away from Manhattan and land in the Hudson River.
Remarkably, everyone survived the water landing and with the help of three well-trained and courageous flight attendants, the plane was evacuated. Within minutes, local ferry boats that witnessed the water landing were at the scene rescuing the passengers and crew from the aircraft's wings and the frigid waters.
The professional and heroic actions of the Flight 1549 crew and the extraordinary efforts of New York and New Jersey rescue workers prevented the loss of any lives during this historic event.

Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives. More than 4,500 of the A320 family have been produced, almost all of which are still in active service. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
