One of the earlier military helicopters, the Bell H-13 Sioux was a light helicopter whose design was developed from the Bell 47. Production of th H-13 later began when the USAAF placed an order in 1947 for an improved version of the 47A model. They were designated YR-13 and YR-13A (for the winterized version). In 1948, the US Army requested Bell 47s which would be designated as H-13. Eventually, the helicopters were given the name Sioux. It was used mainly as an observational aircraft in the early part of the Vietnam War and gained fame when a late-model variant (Bell 47G) appeared in the television series M*A*S*H.

Bell H-13 Sioux

Originally designed as a single engine, light helicopter for use by civilians, the Bell H-13 Sioux first flew on December 8, 1945 as the Bell 47 prototype. Later redesignated H-13 by the United States Army Air Forces, the improved aircraft was used as an observation and basic training helicopter. The design is characterized by a full bubble canopy, skid landing gear and welded-tube tail boom. It has two high-level mounted saddle fuel tanks and a two bladed single rotor. The H-13 was immortalized by the long-running television show M.A.S.H., where it was portrayed in its role as a medevac aircraft.
