Junkers Ju 88A-4   4"   5.5"

The Junkers Ju 88 was a World War II Luftwaffe twin-engine, multi-role aircraft. Designed by Hugo Junkers in the mid 1930s, it became one of the most versatile combat aircraft. After the British unveiled their devastating 1000 bomber raids on Hamburg, Hitler ordered the Luftwaffe to retaliate, so Goering scraped together a force of 250 bombers and struck back. In October, 1943, the Luftwaffe launched the first of 29 raids, sometimes called the Little Blitz. Most raids were made at night and London was attacked on January 21, 1944. The last raid was in March 1944, which was the last German bombing offensive against Britain to include this Ju 88A.

Junkers Ju 88A-4

Designed to meet a German requirement for a heavy dive bomber, the Ju 88 was first flown on December 21, 1936. Affectionately called "The Maid of all Work," the Ju 88 was one of the most versatile aircraft to serve in WWII. It was used as a bomber, dive bomber, heavy fighter, night fighter, torpedo bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, and was produced in more variants than any other WWII twin-engined German aircraft. The Ju 88 was so successful, in fact, that production continued almost uninterrupted between 1936 and 1945, with more than 16,000 Ju 88s rolling off the line by the end of the war.
