B-2A #88-0329 "Spirit of Missouri" was the eighth airframe produced for the B-2 program and was the first operational aircraft. It entered service on March 31st, 1994 and was assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing. The 509th Bomb Wing, based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, is the sole operator of the B-2 and has deployed the B-2 in combat over Serbia, Afghanistan and Iraq. Designed to meet a need for a heavy bomber capable of penetrating sophisticated anti aircraft defenses, the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit first flew on July 17, 1989. This aircraft uses "low observable" stealth technology and is capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear weapons. Though designed for Cold War applications, it has seen modern use in Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan. At $737 million each (in 1997 dollars), the first B-2s were a notoriously expensive aircraft, and only a fraction of the initial 132 aircraft that Congress planned to purchase were eventually obtained. Today, just 20 of these aircraft are flown by the USAF. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
