The United States Navy Aerobatic Team, the "Blue Angels" were formed in 1946 with Grumman F6F Hellcats and have given continuous displays ever since, with several changes in aircraft type, currently flying the McDonnel-Douglas F/A-18A Hornet. In order to transport the ground crew, equipment and spares around to show sites, the team has always had to have a transport unit aircraft. In 1968 the team aquired a single Lockheed C-121J Super Constellation, serial 131623, which replaced the Douglas C-54Q Transport Aircraft. A larger and faster support aircraft was found necessary, and in 1969, the "Blue Angels" team re-equipped from the Grumman F11A Tiger to the McDonnel F-4J Phantom (also available as a Corgi model). The Super Connie was operated from the team's base at Pensacola Naval Air Station, Florida, for three years and was given a smart white roof during its last season with the team. At the end of the 1970 season, this venerable support aircraft was replaced by a Lockheed KC-130F Hercules (also available as a Corgi model) and it has used several of these to this day. The "Blue Angels" Super Connie was stored at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base until August 1972 when it was broken up.

Lockheed C-121J Super Constellation

Designed as a stretched version of the successful Constellation design, the Super Constellation was first flown on October 13th, 1950.

Corgi's 1:144 scale Constellations and Super Connstellations are solidly constructed of diecast metal with only the smallest amount of plastic used. The model's dolphin shaped fuselage and beautifully sculpted nose feature pad-printed windows and doors that do not interrupt the lines of the aircraft. On most models, the solid metal wing has external wing-tip fuel tanks (see photos), a hint of engine detail behind the propellers and simulated de-icing boots on the leading edge. Configuration for ground display is easy with landing gear that installs quickly, and a multi-positional display stand is included for in flight display.
