Westland Lynx HAS 3 ICE XZ238 (434/EE) is one of a number of helicopters, which have served on board Antarctic survey and ice patrol vessel HMS Endurance, in particularly challenging conditions. For this specific role, some of the equipment usually found on Royal Navy Lynx aircraft was removed, but the reliable Lynx proved to be essential in the effective polar operations of Endurance. Two ice modified Lynx aircraft were usually carried on board HMS Endurance, at any one time. When considering military aviation currently in service with the world's air forces, the helicopter is arguably the most flexible and operationally capable aircraft available to commanders. As international commitments and military requirements continue to evolve, the helicopter is becoming increasingly important to operations at home and abroad. Since the Westland Lynx was introduced in 1978, it has proved itself as one of the most advanced and capable helicopters in the world. Fast and highly adaptable, the Lynx has the distinction of being the world's first fully aerobatic helicopter, capable of performing some quite astonishing manoeuvres. A true multirole combat aircraft, the Lynx is also a deadly tank destroyer and submarine hunter, due to remain in British service for many years to come.

Westland Lynx HAS.Mk 3

Designed by Westland Helicopters as a utility craft for civil and naval applications, the Westland Lynx was first flown on March 21, 1971. Military interest in this versatile helicopter led to the development of both naval and battlefield variants, which were used in varying roles from transport and armed escort to evacuation, reconnaissance and anti-tank missions. The Lynx's four-blade main rotor system is powered by twin Rolls Royce engines, and it is capable of performing aerobatic maneuvers not commonly associated with helicopters, such as loops and rolls. In 1972, a Lynx broke the world airspeed record for helicopters, flying at nearly 200 mph.

Corgi's 1:72 scale Westland Lynx has the exceptionally crisp detail that is typical of all Corgi helicopter releases. This model has many movable parts, including a sliding cargo bay door on either side of the diecast metal fuselage and main and tail rotors that spin freely on detailed swashplate head assemblies. The cargo bay is fully rendered and the greenhouse canopy with its separately-applied photo-etched wipers provides a clear view of the crew figures inside. Each release features a variety of ventral-mounted antennas, side mounted weapons and varying nose configurations, and metal landing skids or fixed taxi wheels.
