Two experimental prototypes of the XB-70A were produced for the flight test program, named Air Vehicle 1 and 2 (AV-1 and AV-2). AV-1 was completed on 7 May 1964, and rolled out on 11 May 1964 at Palmdale, California, with its maiden flight taking place on 21 September that same year. The first flight test however, did not go smoothly. One engine had to be shut down and an undercarriage indication malfunction meant that the flight was flown with the undercarriage down, limiting speed to about half that planned. On landing, the left-side rear wheels locked, the tires ruptured, and a fire started. The Valkyrie first became supersonic (Mach 1.1) on the third test flight on 12 October 1964, and flew above Mach 1 for 40 minutes during the following flight on 24 October. Valkyrie AV-1 is now on display alongside other experimental aircraft at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio.
Please note: This model arrives with two separate wing-tip options that can be installed according to your preference. One set is fully extended for take-off and landing while the other set is partially deflected for low-speed cruise flight.
Designed as an experimental prototype for the B-70 supersonic intercontinental bomber, the XB-70A was first flown on September 21st, 1964.To avoid interception on deep-penetration missions, the aircraft was to be capable of Mach 3+ at an altitude of 70,000 feet. These requirements led to a massive, sleek-looking aircraft powered by six afterburning engines and employing an aerodynamic principle known as compression lift, whereby the aircraft effectively rode upon its own shock wave at supersonic speeds. Dragon's 1:200 scale XB-70 is constructed entirely of plastic with finely etched panel lines throughout this exceptionally streamlined model. The long, narrow forward portion of the fuselage is masterfully blended to the top wing surface for a near seamless fit. The razor thin wings join up front to a form a finely finished boundary layer control gutter and details of the twelve elevons are seen at rear. The model's wing-tips can be configured for display in the drooped (lowered) position to highlight the supersonic wing configuration. Additional features include easily configurable landing gear for ground display and an elegant display stand for in-flight display.
