Dragon Models 1:200 Warbirds 52012
Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing Display Model
USAF

1:200 Scale   Length   Width
Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing   3.25"   10.25"

This is a 1/200 scale model of the Northrop YB-49, a prototypical heavy bomber conceived soon after WWII. One look at the futuristic design will enable viewers to understand why it’s often referred to as the "Flying Wing". The YB-49 was a radical design, and Warbirds has created a model that is every bit as striking! What’s remarkable about this model is its incredibly lifelike "metallic skin". The normal method to reproduce such a shiny finish would be to simply add a thin layer of metallic paint to the structure underneath. However, Dragon has adopted an entirely fresh approach for the YB-49 by employing an innovative new technology. In actual fact, the whole underlying raw material of this model is permeated by metallic silver coloring. The model doesn’t have an application of paint on its surfaces - for the entire model is silver -and this has resulted in an even more spectacular layering of shadows and highlights. This shiny model is simply dazzling, with its beauty being far more than just skin deep!

Northrop YB-49 Flying Wing

Designed as a pre-production prototype for the B-49 heavy bomber, the YB-49 was first flown on October 21st, 1947. Three examples were produced, all from YB-35 airframes that were converted from propeller to jet power. Since the original B-35 design relied on the large engine nacelles to provide directional stability, the YB-49 required the addition of small vertical stabilizers to an otherwise radical flying wing design. Although the program was canceled without entering full-scale production, Northrop's experience with flying wings eventually paid off when the company was contracted to build the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber which is of very similar dimensions to the YB-49.
