With this model, the entire assembly of the Shuttle Discovery (with attached External Tank and two Solid Rocket Boosters) plus the MLP and Tractor-Crawler are produced in minute detail. Fine details such as the track links on the four tractors are all perfectly replicated. Even areas that are hidden (e.g. the inside surface of the MLP) are all fully furnished and painted.
The enormous crawler vehicle was built to transfer space rockets and Space Shuttles from NASA’s Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to the launch complex at the Kennedy Space Center, a distance of some 5.6km. Two such vehicles were produced, and they were the world’s largest tracked vehicles when built. The Transporter-Crawler measures 40m long, 35m wide and 7.9m high. Its weight comes in at a staggering 2,721 tonnes! Space vehicles are carried aboard the Mobile Launcher Platform (MLP). With a maximum velocity of 1.6km/h and driving team of nearly 30 people.
The third Space Shuttle to foray into space was Discovery (designated OV-103), its maiden flight occurring on 30 August 1984. A contract for construction of Discovery was awarded to Rockwell International in January 1979 and it rolled out in October 1983. Interestingly, it was 3,120kg lighter than Columbia thanks to construction savings realized after building the three earlier Shuttles. In its 27-year lifespan, Discovery completed 39 successful missions for NASA. Among its accomplishments was spending a cumulative total of 365 days in space, placing the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit, and launching the Ulysses Probe. It traveled 238 million kilometers through space, in the process orbiting Earth 5,830 times. After such a stellar career, it was thus fitting that Discovery should be the first Space Shuttle to enter retirement, something that occurred on 9 March 2011.
Designed as a re-usable spacecraft for orbital human spaceflight, the Space Shuttle first flew on April 12, 1981. This American spacecraft system has flown more than 130 times, undergoing a variety of missions from satellite launch to space science experiments and construction and repair of space stations. The system is comprised of an external tank, two solid rocket boosters and an orbiter vehicle, which carries the crew and payload. The shuttle stack launches vertically, and the orbiter returns to Earth horizontally at the end of each mission. Dragon's 1:400 scale Space Shuttle has a diecast metal fuselage with plastic wings, rudder and cargo bay doors. Individual tile details surround the windscreen and are present on each of the Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) pods. The main engine and OMS exhaust nozzles have been separately applied. Launch Configuration releases come with an external tank and the solid rocket boosters that feature separately applied motor nozzle extension.
