US Navy Strike Fighter Squadron 137 (VFA-137) Kestrels was established on July 2nd, 1985 flying the F/A-18A Hornet. The squadron later transitioned to the F/A-18E Super Hornet in 2003. In 2011, while deployed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, the CAG (Commander of the Air Group) aircraft was painted in this striking digital camouflage scheme. First used on military personnel uniforms, digital fractal camouflage patterns are increasingly being seen applied to military vehicles. The patterns are designed to fool the human brain into perceiving depth, creating a 3-D optical illusion to help break up the shape of the object being camouflaged. Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode.
