On June 29, 2013 a ceremony was held at Wittmund AB, Germany to say farewell to the last F-4 Phantom II in the Luftwaffe. The aircraft had a special paint scheme called "First In - Last Out" along with "Phantom Pharewell" emblazoned along the fuselage sides. F-4F 37+01 serial 72-1111 took its maiden flight on May 18, 1973 and thereby becoming Germany's first and last F-4. This celebration marked 40 years of Phantom II service with the Luftwaffe that operated 175 of these aircraft and in which more than 1,000 pilots had flown. Designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
