VMF-121 (Marine Fighting Squadron) was established in June 1941 and over time were re-designated VMA-121, VMA(AW)-121, VMFA(AW)-121 equipped with the F/A-18D Hornet. On November 20, 2012 the squadron officially became VMFA-121 and received their first three F-35Bs. In early 2017 VMFA-121 (Green Knights) transferred from MCAS Yuma, Arizona to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan becoming the first forward deployed permanent F-35B squadron. Since September 2015 F-35B 169164 has worn VM-20 at VMFAT-501, VK-00 with VMFA-121 and later VK-01 with the same squadron.
Designed to meet the US Military's requirement for a multi-role Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006. This single-seat fighter is one of the most advanced aircraft of our time, said to be four times more effective at air-to-air combat and eight times more effective at air-to-ground combat than any other existing aircraft. It uses a low-maintenance stealth technology, and some versions have an innovative Lift System, which gives the F-35 vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The US plans to buy a total of 2,443 F-35s at a cost of $323 billion, which makes the F-35 the most expensive defense program in history. © Copyright 2003-2023 The Flying Mule, Inc.
