In September 2018 VMFA-211 was deployed aboard the U.S. Navy Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Essex. On the 28th of the month an F-35B carried out a strike against Afghan Taliban. This marked the first time a U.S. F-35 was used in combat when it delivered a precision-guided bomb. The aircraft wore the name Lt. Col. Chris "Otis" Raible on the side under the cockpit to honor the former commander of VMFA-211 killed in Afghanistan in 2012. Later in 2018 mission markings were applied to F-35B 169415's front landing gear door.
Designed to meet the US Military's requirement for a multi-role Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006. This single-seat fighter is one of the most advanced aircraft of our time, said to be four times more effective at air-to-air combat and eight times more effective at air-to-ground combat than any other existing aircraft. It uses a low-maintenance stealth technology, and some versions have an innovative Lift System, which gives the F-35 vertical take-off and landing capabilities. The US plans to buy a total of 2,443 F-35s at a cost of $323 billion, which makes the F-35 the most expensive defense program in history. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
