Electronic Attack Squadron VAQ-136 "Gauntlets" was formed at NAS Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor, Washington on April 6, 1973. In 1978 they moved to Atsugi, Japan and assigned to the USS Midway of Carrier Wing 5. The "Gauntlets" were the first Prowler squadron to launch assaults against Iraq during Operation Desert Storm. In 2008 VAQ-136 cross-decked from the USS Kitty Hawk" to the USS George Washington. On March 11, 2011 a tsunami hit Japan so VAQ-136 deployed to Guam and from June until November 2011 they were on the USS George Washington.

Grumman EA-6B Prowler

Developed from the EA-6A Electronic Intruder, the EA-6B is a carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft that was first flown on May 25th, 1968. The Prowler is a key element in any USN or USMC strike-force by disrupting and jamming enemy radio and radar signals, providing protection for attacking aircraft as they carry out their mission. The aircraft can also be equipped with anti-radiation missiles desigend to home-in on enemy radar installations and neutralize surface-to-air missile threats. After a long history with the EA-6B, the US Navy began transitioning to the F/A-18G Growler in 2009.
