In 2005 Northrop T-38 Talon 68-8150 belonged to the 7th Combat Training Squadron at Holloman AFB. The Talons were used for transitional training for the F-117 and providing aggressor attacks against the Nighthawk carried out over the New Mexico desert sky. In 2005 the decision was made to retire the F-117 in favor of the F-22 Raptor. On December 17, 2006 the 7th CTS at Holloman AFB was inactivated after 65 years of active duty. T-38 Talon 68-8150 continued with the 49th FW helping to train Raptor pilots. Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The pressurized tandem-seat cockpit offers excellent visibility for both student and instructor and provides a comfortable training environment. Being both lightweight and nimble, the T-38 is used extensively to prepare military pilots for high performance jet aircraft and has earned the nickname "White Rocket". The T-38 was famously flown by the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron during the 1970s and proved popular with NASA who use it as an astronaut trainer and chase-plane. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
