This Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkrad belonged to the 1st Gebirgs Division (1st Mountain Division), an elite unit mostly comprised of Bavarians and some Austrians. The Division took part in the invasion of Yugoslavia and then entered the Soviet Union and became part of Operation Barbarossa. They also took part in the Second Battle of Kharkov and proceeded through the Southern Soviet Union and into the Caucasus area as part of Operation Edelweiss. In 1945 what was left of the division surrendered to the Americans in Austria.
Designed as a light tractor for airborne troops, the Kleines Kettenkraftrad or "Kettenkrad" entered production in 1939. The vehicle was essentially a half-track motorcyle with steering accomplished by turning the handlebars which would, in turn, apply braking to the tracks for tight turns. Kettenkrads most frequently served as runway tugs for aircraft and were perhaps most well-known for towing the Me 262 in order to preserve precious fuel that would otherwise be needed for taxiing. © Copyright 2003-2023 The Flying Mule, Inc.
