In 1951 Ford Motor Company was awarded a contract to develop a replacement for the M38 Jeep Light Utility Vehicle. The vehicle had to be a 1/4 ton 4x4 Military Utility Tactical Truck (M151 MUTT) and after extensive testing began production in 1959 until 1982. The M151, M151A1, and M151A2 are a general purpose personnel or cargo carrier. Eventually manufacturing contracts were awarded to Kaiser and AM General Corp and well over 100,000 MUTTs of many variants produced.
Even after years of testing the M151 had a major problem with roll-over especially when cornering. This vehicle saw its first combat in the Vietnam War and lasted well into the 1980s when it was replaced by the AM General HMMWV. The M151A2 arrived in 1970 with an improved rear suspension which improved the cornering problem of roll-over but didn’t eliminate it. The USMC continued to use a variant of the M151 until 1999 because of its ability to be transported inside a CH-53 helicopter.

Hobby Master's 1:48 scale Jeep packs a lot of scale detail into a small package. The chassis and drive train is constructed almost entirely in diecast metal providing a nice weighted feel to the model. The interior features a pad-printed instrument panel, separately painted seat cushions and scale steering wheel and transmission gear-shifts levers. Each release highlights a variety of cabin equipment configurations such as a center mounted machine gun, open or closed ragtop and rear mounted radio equipment (See Photos). Separately applied battlefield equipment includes shovels, hatchets, jerry cans and a spare tire. Underneath the model the drive train and leaf-spring suspension are clearly visible.
