The Canadair North Star took its first flight on July 15, 1946 and soon became very popular worldwide. Canadair C-54GM North Star 17515 c/n 122 was manufactured in 1948 by Canadair Ltd., Canada and served with the 426 "Thunderbird" Squadron until 1962 when the Squadron stood down. 17515 was retained by the RCAF until 1965 when it became their last North Star to be retired. Over 17 years it served in Korea, United Nations operations worldwide, northern re-supply and humanitarian relief. In 1966 71515 went to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
Designed to meet a United Airlines requirement for a long-range passenger airliner, the Douglas DC-4 was first flown on June 7, 1938. The prototype was a very ambitious four-engined, pressurized aircraft that was three times the size of its predecessor, the DC-3-a design that proved far too expensive and difficult for civilian airlines to maintain. Douglas revised the design, but by the time it was complete WWII was well underway and development of the aircraft was channeled to the US military.
