The Panzer II is the common name used for a family of German tanks used in World War II. The official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen II (PzKpfw II). Although the vehicle had originally been designed as a stopgap while larger, more advanced tanks were developed, it nonetheless went on to play an important role in the early years of World War II, during the Polish and French campaigns. The Panzer II was the most numerous tank in the German Panzer divisions beginning with the invasion of France. It was used in both North Africa against the Western Allies and on the Eastern Front against the Soviet Union.
Designed to fill a gap in the production of the Panzer III and Panzer IV tanks, which were experiencing delays in development, the Panzer II or Panzerkampfwagen II was first tested in October of 1935. Larger than its predecessor, the Panzer I, the Panzer II was Germany's primary battle tank until the beginning of 1941 but was nevertheless fairly ineffective in combat. It was really better suited for use as a light reconnaissance tank, and is particularly important because of the role it played in the development of later more powerful Panzers. Panzer IIs were removed from the front lines in 1942. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
