The reliable, uncomplicated concept of the Po-2's design made it an ideal training aircraft, as well as doubling as a low-cost ground attack, aerial reconnaissance, psychological warfare and liaison aircraft during war, proved to be one of the most versatile light combat types to be built in the Soviet Union.
The Po-2 was famously flown by the all female Soviet 588th Night Bomber Regiment known as the "Night Witches". As a trainer, Po-2 was never intended to see combat and thus was extremely vulnerable to enemy fire. An attack technique of the night bombers was to idle the engine near the target and glide to the bomb release point, with only wind noise left to reveal their location. German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and named the pilots "Night Witches." Due to the weight of the bombs and the low altitude of flight, the pilots carried no parachutes until 1944.
Designed as a primary trainer biplane, the Po-2 was first flown on January 7th, 1928. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
