The Battle of Khalkhin Gol was fought between the Soviet Union, Mongolia and the Empire of Japan in 1939. The battle was named after the river Khalkhin Gol passing through the battlefield. In Japan, the battle was known as the Nomonhan Incident after a nearby village on the border between Mongolia and Manchuria. On July 12, 1939, 20 fighters from the 1st Sentai claimed eleven victories but recorded its first losses when two pilots failed to return. The unit commander Lieutenant Colonel Toshio Kato, baled out over Soviet-held territory. He had suffered severe burns, but he was rescued when Sergeant Major Toshio Matsu-ura landed to pick him up and flew him back to base. Meanwhile Sergeant Majors Mitsuyoshi Tarui and Muneyoshi Motojima strafed approaching tanks, which were attempting to intervene. Matsu-ura was decorated with the Kinshi Order, 5th Grade, for this rescue.
