On August 5, 2013 the F/A-18F Advanced Super Hornet prototype (BuNo 168492) completed its maiden flight. Produced by Boeing and Northrop Grumman the ASH received engines increasing performance from 22,000 pounds to 26,400 pounds of thrust per engine. Conformal fuel tanks were added to carry 3,500 pounds of fuel. There is provision for an Enclosed Weapons Pod (EWP) carrying 2,500 pounds of weapons internally and the cockpit is updated. The aircraft was given a special paint to reduce radar cross-section making it more stealthy and capable of performing well into the 2030s. Please note: This version of the model includes a center-line weapons pod only. No other weapons are included. Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode.
