VF-84 was established on July 1, 1955 as VF-86 but changed to VF-84. This was the third unit to be named VF-84 and they assumed the nickname "Jolly Rogers". F-14A 160408 c/n 264 made an appearance in the movie "Executive Decision" as Vic 201. In 1993 and assigned to VF-84 160408 deployed with the USS Theodore Roosevelt on March 11, 1993 until September 8 for a cruise to the Mediterranean, Adriatic and Red Sea. This would be their last on USS Theodore Roosevelt as they were disestablished on October 1, 1995. Designed to carry the formidable long range AIM-54 Phoenix missile, the Grumman F-14 Tomcat was first flown on December 21st, 1970. Made famous by the Hollywood film Top Gun, the F-14 replaced the F-4 Phantom II as the US Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter. Its design includes a variable geometry wing that can sweep back for high speed supersonic intercepts and forward for improved positioning in air to air dogfights. Nicknamed "Bombcat," the F-14 spent much of its late career in an air-to-ground role, carrying the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
