Vought F4U-1A serial number 883 Bu.No.17883 belonged to VMF-214 "Black Sheep" and was a shared ride for Major Greg "Pappy" Boyington and 1st Lt. Bob McClurg. The aircraft wore the name "Martha" which was McClurg's mother's name. On August 7, 1943 McClurg joinedVMF-214 and served two tours with VMF-214 scoring seven victories between September 16, 1943 – December 28,1943. In September 1943 Greg Boyington took command of VMF-214. On December 26, 1943 Major Boyington shot down four Zeros over Rabaul. Boyington had 20 victories with VMF-214.
Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for a single-seat carrier based fighter, the F4U was first flown on May 29th, 1940. This versatile aircraft saw service with both the Navy and Marine Corps in WW II and in the Korean War. During its lifetime, the Corsair underwent numerous improvements such as a lengthened fuselage, a high visibility bubble-top canopy and folding inverted gull wings that provided clearance for a large propeller.
