The first elements of the sPzAbt.101 arrived in Normandy on June 12, 1944, with 45 Tiger II's and numerous other types of vehicles including Schwimmwagen Type 166 WH-1361 549. With 6 days ashore the Allies had managed to break out from the beach heads and by the end of June 1944 the sPzAbt.101 had lost 1/3 of their tanks as well as most of its support vehicles. By the end of August the remaining tanks had been lost.
The Schwimmwagen (Swimming Car) was an amphibious all-wheel-drive off-roaders, used extensively by the German Army. Porsche developed the Schwimmwagen's unitized body-tub structure, since the flat floorpan chassis of existing VW vehicles were unsuited for movement through water. When crossing water, a screw propeller could be lowered from the rear deck engine cover. Reversing was accomplished with the standard equipment paddle, or by shifting into reverse, which allowed the wheel-rotation to take the vehicle back. The front wheels doubled as rudders, so the steering wheel could be used on land and on water. Schwimmwagens were the most mass-produced amphibious car in history. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:48 scale Schwimmwagen hull is constructed almost entirely in diecast metal and bristling with fine scale details such as delicate head-lights and front and side mount bumpers. The sparse interior features scale driver controls, a pad-printed instrument panel and simulated wooden plank floorboards. One of the most notable features is the screw propeller mechanism that pivots down to engage the gearbox assembly. Additional features include a separately applied spare tire up front, a side mounted shovel and ore and top mounted engine muffler at the rear.
