The Sikorsky UH-60A "Black Hawk" is a twin-turbine engine, single rotor, semimonocoque fuselage, rotary wing helicopter. The "Black Hawk" was developed to meet a US Army requirement for a UH-1 Iroquois replacement in 1972. Three prototypes were constructed, the first (YUH-60) flying in October 1974, and evaluated against a rival (YUH-61) Boeing-Vertol design. The Black Hawk was selected for production and the UH-60A entered service with the US Army in 1979.
Designed as a better-performing, more reliable replacement for the UH-1 Huey, the UH-60 Black Hawk was first flown on November 29, 1974. The Black Hawk was one of the first aircraft to use the General Electric T700, a common turbine engine designed for use in multiple Army helicopters. This four-bladed, twin-engined, medium-lift aircraft has a low-profile shape so that it can be transported aboard the C-130 Hercules. It also has greater survivability than the helicopter it replaced, with advanced avionics and electronics such as the Global Positioning System (GPS).
