The Douglas DC-3 is an American fixed-wing, propeller-driven aircraft whose speed and range revolutionized air transport in the 1930s and 1940s. Because of its lasting impact on the airline industry and World War II, it is generally regarded as one of the most significant transport aircraft ever made. Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for an enlarged version of the DC-2, the DC-3 was first flown on December 17th, 1935. Capable of carrying 24 passengers at a cruising speed of 180 mph, the DC-3 quickly became a popular, widely publicized aircraft, carrying 90 percent of the world's commercial air traffic. A variety of engines were fitted to the DC-3, starting with the Wright R-1820 Cyclone. Later aircraft used the Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp Radial, which offered higher-altitude and single engine performance. For both airline and military use, the DC-3 proved to be tough, flexible, and easy to operate. © Copyright 2003-2009 The Flying Mule, Inc.
